Business names, company names, and NZBNs
May 3, 2026A practical checklist for names, NZBNs, and company registration before printing menus or signs.
A trading name, company name, domain name, and trade mark are different things. Reserving a company name does not automatically protect a brand, and using a Facebook page name does not create a company.
If you are forming a company, reserve the company name through the Companies Register and complete incorporation within the allowed window. If you are a sole trader, check whether an NZBN would help suppliers and customers identify your business.
Keep the exact spelling consistent across invoices, bank details, Google profiles, signage, menus, and Kislap listings.
Key facts
- The Companies Register says a reserved company name must be used within 20 working days and name reservation costs $10 plus GST.
- NZBN says self-employed sole traders, partnerships, and trusts currently in business in New Zealand are eligible to apply for an NZBN.
